New Delhi: Five illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday for attempting to enter the Red Fort premises forcibly. The monument is closed to the public since July 15 for security reasons ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
The Delhi Police informed on Tuesday that the five men – aged between 20-25 years – are illegal immigrants working as labourers in Delhi. The police recovered some Bangladeshi documents from them. An investigation has been launched to find out the motive behind their attempt to enter Red Fort at this time.
Efforts to identify and detain illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants are continuing across the National Capital Region (NCR). On Saturday, the Gurugram Police detained ten of them for residing illegally in the city. The process has started to send them back to Bangladesh after it was confirmed that they are citizens of that country.
Sandeep Kumar, PRO of Gurugram Police said that Bangladeshi documents have been recovered from them. “Ten illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been detained. The process to deport them has begun,” he said.
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up around Delhi ahead of Independence Day. Drills are underway at vital locations to check the preparedness of security personnel. Recently, seven police personnel, including constables and head constables, assigned to secure the Red Fort, were suspended for negligence of duty.
This happened after they failed to detect a dummy bomb carried into the premises by plainclothes personnel of the Special Cell. This was part of a drill. Action was taken against the policemen after they failed to detect the fake device or nab the person carrying it.
“A team of the Special Cell conducted a drill on Saturday in which they entered the Red Fort premises in civil dress with a dummy bomb. At that time, the policemen deployed for the security of the Red Fort could not trace the bomb, due to which they were suspended,” an official said.
