Considering the tourism potential of lighthouses, the Centre has initiated action for development of 65 lighthouses in the country 5 in Odisha on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, informed in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The five lighthouses identified in Odisha are Gopalpur Lighthouse in Ganjam; Puri Lighthouse in Puri; Chandrabhaga Lighthouse in Puri; Paradip Lighthouse in Jagatsinghpur district and False Point Lighthouse in Kendrapara district.

The project components for the lighthouses have been finalised and necessary clearances from State Coastal Zone Management Authority for Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance and other local bodies have been sought.

“Since the above projects are on PPP mode, no fund allocation is envisaged,” the Minister said.

A lift was installed at the lighthouse in Chandrabhaga while the 184-year-old False Point lighthouse at Batighar is a heritage structure.
