The myriad festivals, celebrated in different parts of the country, reflect India’s vibrant and splendid culture.

It is no surprise that our producers and directors borrow themes from these colourful festivals for their movies.

With Durga Puja being celebrated even during these tough times, it’s relevant to talk about one of the most popular festivals in the country. The annual festival pays homage to Goddess Durga, in her battle against the demon Mahisasura. The festival embodies the spirit of strength, bravery and the triumph of good over evil.

Here are 5 movies that celebrate the spirit of Durga Puja:

1)  Kahaani

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, this 2012 movie traces the story of software engineer Vidya Bagchi who is searching for her missing husband. Her efforts to navigate the thick mire of lies, deceit and danger showcase the strength of a determined woman — much like the Goddess. The Puja celebrations provide a striking contrast to the sombre atmosphere of the movie.

2) Bodhon

The movie begins on the first day of Durga Puja celebrations, with the focus on Ishanni, who is conflicted between motherhood and the bitterness she hides within. Directed by Ayananshu Bannerjee, it’s a powerful depiction of motherly qualities, usually associated with Ma Durga.

3) Pather Panchali

Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s famous novel, this is Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray’s first film. It shows the nurturing and benevolent nature of titular character Durga for her brother Apu, as they deal with the drudgery of poverty. The festivities depicted in the film bring in sharp contrast the true spirit of Durga’s nature as shown by her namesake.

4) Debipaksha

An astonishing parallel to the story of Goddess Durga, this movie exhibits the might of feminine strength and justice, as Haimanti seeks revenge on her molester on the eve of Mahalaya, the first day of Devipaksha (the fortnight of Durga Puja festival).

5) Joy Baba Felunath

With Durga Puja celebrating the dispelling of all mysteries, this Satyajit Ray movie sees his famous detective character Prodosh C Mitter attempting to solve a theft and murder case amidst Durga Puja in Benaras, in an amazing display of mental prowess and courage.
