Tehran: The Iranian government has shared video evidence of its forces seizing commercial container ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global oil trade, according to Al Jazeera.
The released footage vividly captures masked armed members from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — the elite force tasked with asymmetric naval operations — swiftly scaling the cargo ship’s hull before overpowering the deck and securing the vessel. This dramatic visual comes directly on the heels of the IRGC’s public claim that their naval units “captured two vessels in the strait on Wednesday,” marking a bold assertion of control in one of the world’s most contested waterways.
Following the high-stakes boarding action, the IRGC swiftly affirmed its unchallenged authority over the situation, officially stating that “both ships were directed towards the Iranian coast” for further inspection and processing.
As Al Jazeera reports, the strategic timing of this video release serves to showcase Iran’s advancing maritime capabilities and deterrence posture, particularly against the backdrop of escalating regional frictions — including proxy conflicts and sanctions — and a tightening blockade that threatens to disrupt key global shipping routes carrying roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply through the narrow Strait of Hormuz.
Panama Condemns ‘Illegal’ Seizure Under Its Flag
Panama issued a fierce rebuke of the MSC Francesca’s seizure — a Panama-registered, Italian-owned vessel — deeming it “illegal.”
In a statement, the foreign ministry said: “The ship was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was seized and forcibly taken to Iranian territorial waters.” It highlighted risks of “a serious threat to maritime security” and branded the act an “unnecessary escalation” amid global efforts to maintain open passage free of “threats or blackmail of any kind.”
Iranian state media IRIB quoted the IRGC naming the ships as MSC-FRANCESCA and EPAMINODES, with allegations that crews were “tampering with navigational aid systems and jeopardising maritime security.” The IRGC connected MSC-FRANCESCA to the “Zionist regime” while claiming both vessels sought to “secretly exit the Strait of Hormuz without authorisation,” framing the seizures as essential for upholding navigational safety.
Trump Pushes Diplomacy as Iran Dismisses Overture
The vessel seizures erupted just hours after US President Donald Trump declared an indefinite extension to a temporary ceasefire, a move intended to ease mounting Middle East flashpoints. In a a CNBC interview, Trump directly wooed Iran toward negotiations: “Iran can get themselves on a very good footing if they make a deal,” outlining a path to dramatic economic revival for Tehran.
While referring to sustained US naval presence nearby, he implored rationality: “They have to use reason and they have to use common sense, and they can get themselves into a great position to make themselves into a great country.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian swiftly rebuffed the proposal, branding US rhetoric as “hypocritical” and self-contradictory against the backdrop of American blockades.
