Berlin: A footballer was shown the red card by the referee for spitting in an opponent’s face in the German premier division league.
Striker Marcus Thuram, who plays for Borussia Monchengladbach, was sent off the pitch in the 79th minute after he spit at Hoffenheim defender Stefan Posch following a clash.
The incident happened behind the referee’s back. But once the players brought it to his notice, the referee referred it to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Thuram was ‘caught’ in the act in the video replay and immediately expelled.
