As the world observed Earth Day 2025 on April 22, this year’s theme of ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ was a compelling reminder that the duty to protect and nurture our planet lies in our own hands and definite actions. In Odisha’s fast-growing industrial landscape, Vedanta Aluminium has emerged as a beacon of proactive environmental stewardship. While the company consistently champions sustainability through diverse initiatives around the year, it has recently achieved an important milestone through its Matri Van initiative. Having pledged to plant one lakh saplings in Jharsuguda, Vedanta has now announced the successful completion of this significant goal.

Interestingly, the company has achieved this feat within the span of a year, a testament to its deep-rooted commitment to ecological restoration and preservation. The Matri Van initiative had commenced in July 2024 with a mass plantation drive aligned with the Government of India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), the event saw several district officials, Vedanta employees and school children come together to plant over 2,000 saplings on a reclaimed ash storage area in Kapumal, located within Jharsuguda district.

The successful completion of the one lakh sapling plantation target underscores Vedanta Aluminium’s dedication to enhancing Jharsuguda’s green cover and fostering diverse biodiversity in the region. It is set to have a significant impact on the local environment by contributing to better air quality, more carbon absorption, and wider natural habitats, while also helping highlight the potential of transforming previously utilized land into thriving green spaces.

This landmark achievement is the latest outcome of Vedanta Aluminium’s continuous focus on enabling sustainability efforts. As one of the world’s largest single-location aluminium smelters, Vedanta’s Jharsuguda unit is leading the wider industry’s sustainable transformation. It has significantly expanded its fleet of electric lithium-ion forklifts to nearly 50 units, solidifying Vedanta Aluminium as the largest deployer of electric lithium-ion forklifts in India. The electric forklifts directly contribute to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions arising from the plant’s operations. Further, Vedanta’s Jharsuguda unit has entered into a crucial gas sales agreement (GSA) with GAIL Gas Limited towards sourcing a consistent supply of natural gas to power its casthouse operations. These are part of Vedanta Aluminium’s larger transition to sustainable energy sources, marking a significant step towards decarbonization and a reduced carbon footprint.

Recognising the vital importance of fostering ecological balance, Vedanta Aluminium has also forged a partnership with PwC to bolster its biodiversity and carbon reduction efforts in Odisha. This collaboration will enable a more strategic and expert-led approach to environmental management in the region, ensuring long-term positive impacts on the local ecosystem. Vedanta Jharsuguda has maintained a strong track record of environmental stewardship. For example, in FY24 alone, it recycled an impressive 7.05 billion litres of water, showcasing its commitment to efficient resource management and minimizing water consumption.

These are further amplified by ongoing investments in state-of-the-art pollution control technologies, a strong emphasis on waste utilization and circular economy, and environmental awareness initiatives that extend beyond its immediate operations and actively engages with local communities to support sustainable development.

The diverse efforts have contributed to Vedanta Aluminium ranking 2nd on the prestigious S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment in FY25. This is an important recognition that positions it as a leader in responsible practices within the global aluminium sector. So, on this Earth Day, the one lakh saplings taking root in Jharsuguda symbolize a tangible commitment by Vedanta to preserving the environment. They are a powerful reminder that collective action, driven by a genuine concern for the planet, can yield remarkable results in building a sustainable tomorrow.
