Former Cop Derek Chauvin Convicted Of George Floyd’s Murder
Minneapolis: White former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering African-American George Floyd. The trial was a racially charged one that was seen as a pivotal test of accountability of police in the United States.
The case was deliberated for less than 11 hours by the jury and found 45-year-old Chauvin guilty of all three charges — second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter.
The heavily guarded downtown Minneapolis courtroom erupted in cheers when the verdicts were announced following a three-week trial that had the entire nation on the edge, reported news agency AFP.
Chauvin, who was on bail, was handcuffed after Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill read out the unanimous verdicts reached by the racially diverse seven-woman five-man jury.
