Bhawanipatna: Veteran leader and former Rajya Sabha member Dhaneswar Majhi passed away at a hospital in Odisha’s Kalahandi on Wednesday following a brief illness. He was 83.

Majhi, who was also a five-time MLA from Kesinga and Narla, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Kesinga hospital, family sources said.

Born on July 5, 1941, Majhi showed keen interest in political activities during his student days which prompted him to join the Janata Dal.

During his illustrious political career spanning over four decades, the veteran leader played a significant role in both state and national politics.

Majhi served as a Rajya Sabha member from 1978 to 1984 and was elected as MLA from Narla and Kesinga constituencies multiple times (1971, 1974, 2000, 2004, and 2014). He had recently quit the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Throughout his career, Majhi remained committed to serving the people of Odisha, earning respect across party lines. His demise has left a void in the state’s political landscape.

A host of dignitaries have mourned his demise. Tributes poured in from political leaders and well-wishers, remembering Majhi’s contributions to public service.
