Fraudster From Bengal Held For Duping Woman Of Rs 1.9 Lakh For ATM installation In Odisha

Jeypore: Cyber Cell police have arrested one person on charges of duping a woman of Rs 1.92 lakh at Borrigumma in Odisha’s Koraput district.

The accused has been identified as Malaya Maity (35), a native of Nadigram Khadambadi in West Bengal.

According to police sources, Maity contacted one Manasi Mishra of Borrigumma for installing a Hitachi ATM counter in her land at a prime location and accordingly, asked her to transfer about Rs 1.92 lakh as security to a particular account number.

However, no ATM counter installed on her land and she was also unable to contact the fraudster after transferring the amount. Following which , she filed a complaint in Borrigumma police station on December 27, 2023. The case was subsequently handed over to Koraput Cyber Cell.

The investigation revealed that Maity had put up an advertisement in local papers for the need of assistants to locate prime land and details of land owners to install Hitachi ATM counters. He had then contacted 10 people in the district and asked them to pay Rs 15,000 by showing a forged letter of Ministry of Urban Development. A team was then formed and it traced the mobile number of the accused and arrested him from his village in the neighbouring state, said Koraput Cyber Cell officer in-charge Bhabani Pradhan.

Three mobile phones and Rs 2 lakh was seized from his possession. Incriminating documents with names and numbers of people whom he had planned to target, the source added.
