Ukhrul: Fresh firing rocked Litan village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Tuesday as ethnic clashes between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki groups entered the third day, with 21 houses torched so far and a curfew in place, as reported by PTI.
According to officials, the unrest erupted on Saturday night after a Tangkhul Naga man was allegedly assaulted by a group of 7-8 people at Litan village. Initial talks between the victim’s side and Litan Sareikhong chief agreed to customary resolution and a Sunday meeting, but it collapsed. Instead, Sikibung villagers reportedly attacked the chief’s home, firing shots past the police station as they passed.
By Sunday night, stone-pelting clashes between the two tribal groups prompted prohibitory orders. Around midnight Monday, several Tangkhul homes at Litan Sareikhong were set ablaze, attributed to Kuki militants by authorities.
Reports said Tuesday morning saw renewed gunfire, leading to a five-day internet suspension in Ukhrul district, police said. State minister Govindas Konthoujam reported 17 more houses burned by 5 am, raising the total number of homes gutted to 21. “Situation remains tense,” he said, noting deputy CM L Dikho’s on-site engagement with locals.
Chief minister Y Khemchand Singh, after visiting injured victims at RIMS Hospital, urged calm on social media: “Arising from a misunderstanding, the incident is under control. Uphold peace and rule of law.” He assured full medical aid.
Reports said additional forces have been deployed at Litan, with senior officials monitoring the situation. Manipur Police continued area-dominance operations, seizing a .303 rifle, two 12-bore guns, four 9mm pistols, and 36 grenades on Monday from Imphal East’s Ngarou Chengjel range.
