New Delhi: In a letter to the nation on the occasion of Samvidhan Diwas (Constitution Day), Narendra Modi described the Constitution of India as a sacred document that has guided the country’s progress.

Modi wrote that it is the responsibility of every citizen to fulfill the dreams envisioned by the framers of the Constitution, and emphasised that when people act with this sense of duty, the nation’s social and economic progress will multiply.

Recalling his own journey — from a humble, economically disadvantaged background to serving as head of government for over 24 years — Modi said the power of the Constitution made that possible. “It is the power of our Constitution that enabled a person like me, coming from a humble and economically disadvantaged family, to serve as the Head of the Government continuously for over 24 years. I still remember the moments in 2014, when I came to Parliament for the first time and bowed, touching the steps of the greatest temple of democracy. Again, in 2019, after the election results, when I entered the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, I bowed and placed the Constitution on my forehead as a mark of reverence. This Constitution has given several others, like me, the power to dream and the strength to work towards it,” he wrote.

On Constitution Day, we pay tribute to the framers of our Constitution. Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat.

Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty. While it empowers us with…

Modi remembers Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, Amedbkar

Modi recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that rights flow from the performance of duties. He highlighted that fulfilling duties is the foundation for social and economic progress.

“On Constitution Day, we remember all the inspiring members of the Constituent Assembly, which was presided over by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who contributed to the making of the Constitution. We recall the efforts of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who chaired the Drafting Committee with remarkable foresight. Several distinguished women members of the Constituent Assembly enriched the Constitution with their thoughtful interventions and visionary perspectives,” PM Modi further wrote, honouring those who helped frame the document.

He also paid tributes to the framers of the Constitution. “Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat,” PM Modi said.

Modi also highlighted past efforts to honour the Constitution, including a Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra in Gujarat, during which the Constitution was — symbolically — placed on an elephant and taken through a procession involving people from various walks of life.

Marking 2025 as a special year, the Prime Minister pointed out that in addition to Samvidhan Diwas, the country also commemorates the 150th birth anniversaries of freedom fighters Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Birsa Munda — figures who made monumental contributions to India’s identity and unity.

Modi reminded citizens that the right to vote is among the Constitution’s greatest gifts — and urged them never to miss the opportunity to exercise it. He said inspiring youth with responsibility and pride will help preserve democratic values and strengthen the nation.

Finally, he observed that while 2049 will mark 100 years since India gained freedom, the choices and policies made today would shape the lives of generations to come — making it imperative for everyone to act with commitment and dedication to uphold the Constitution.
