New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday firmly ruled out any third-party involvement in the ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, asserting in the Rajya Sabha that the cessation of hostilities was a result of direct communication between the two nations.

Addressing the Upper House, Jaishankar rejected speculation that foreign powers, including the United States, played a role in brokering peace following India’s cross-border counter-terror operations in May. “Let me be absolutely clear — there was no third-party intervention in the ceasefire. This was an understanding between India and Pakistan alone,” he said, responding to a query during the debate on national security.

The statement comes amid growing political discourse over the end of Operation Sindoor — launched by India in retaliation to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, including tourists. The operation targeted alleged terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control.

Jaishankar categorically stated that no telephonic communication took place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump during the period of April 22 to June 16, 2025 — the peak phase of the military engagement. “There was no such conversation. The reports suggesting otherwise are factually incorrect,” he added.

He further emphasized that the ceasefire was not influenced by any trade negotiations or diplomatic pressure. “The decision to halt operations was taken only after India had achieved its intended strategic and security objectives,” Jaishankar asserted, countering claims that economic considerations played a role in the de-escalation.

The External Affairs Minister’s statement appeared aimed at quelling opposition questions and international commentary over the pace and nature of the de-escalation, including claims that the US had facilitated a backchannel between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Congress normal Vs Modi normal

Jaishankar also lashed out at Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, drawing a comparison between “Congress normal” and “Modi normal”. “I will divide the term ‘new normal’. One was ‘Congress’ normal’ and one is ‘Modi normal’,” the minister said.

Jaishankar responded to Rahul Gandhi’s questions on China. “…There are ‘China Gurus’. One of them is the member sitting in front of me (Jairam Ramesh), whose affection for China is so great, ‘unhone ek sandhi bana li thi India aur China ki, Chindia’… I may lack knowledge about China because I did not learn about China through the Olympics… Some people gained their knowledge of China during their visit to the Olympics. Let’s not discuss who they met or what they signed… They also took private tuitions at their homes from the Chinese Ambassador… ‘China Gurus’ say that Pakistan and China have close ties… We are aware of it and are tackling it… However, saying that these ties developed overnight, this means they were sleeping during the history class…,” ge said.

‘Modi govt corrected Nehru’s mistakes’

“We were told for 60 years that nothing can be done. Pandit Nehru’s mistakes can’t be corrected. The Narendra Modi government showed it can be corrected. The Article 370 was corrected. The Indus Water Treaty is being corrected, it was being held in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably gives up its support of terrorism. We had warned that blood and water can not flow together, today, we are demonstrating that we say, we will do. Blood and water will not flow together,” he said.
