Bengaluru: Food safety inspections at 10 prominent clubs in Bengaluru have uncovered multiple violations, including expired meat, unclean kitchens and food items that lacked mandatory labelling and expiry details.

The establishments inspected by officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) included the Bowring Club, Century Club, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Club and Mahalakshmi Layout Club.

Authorities found expired meat and other unsafe or improperly documented food products at some of the clubs. At least two establishments were issued notices following the inspections.

Expired Fish Found At KSCA Club Canteen

At the canteen of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (Chinnaswamy Stadium) Club, inspectors discovered expired fish. A quantity of toor dal was also found without details showing when it had been packed or stored. Officials further reported inadequate cleanliness and poor hygiene in the kitchen.

The canteen was served a notice for the violations. The presence of expired food, officials said, raises serious health concerns because such products may pose risks to consumers.

A separate notice was issued to the canteen at Mahalakshmi Layout Club after inspectors found that the kitchen was not being maintained in line with prescribed hygiene requirements. The club was questioned over the condition of its food preparation area, as reported by India Today.

The inspections are part of a wider food safety crackdown in Bengaluru, with authorities intensifying checks at clubs, restaurants and other food establishments.

Rotten Food Seized

Recent raids at several luxury hotels, clubs and restaurants have exposed other violations, including rotten meat, expired food, filthy kitchens and kitchens infested with cockroaches. While some establishments received notices, others were directed to close.

During a special three-day inspection drive, food safety officials checked 60 hotels and collected 77 samples for testing. They also seized 640 kg of meat and 276 kg of rotten vegetables, besides other expired and unsafe food products.

The campaign was subsequently extended to high-end restaurants and pubs. At Skyye Lounge in UB City, officials found 45 kg of rotten chicken and beef, including meat covered with fungus. They also recovered 6 kg of vegetable cutlets and 15 litres of used cooking oil. The lounge’s kitchen was shut down over unhygienic conditions.

Across multiple establishments, officials seized or discarded 132 kg of food items during the inspections.

Earlier checks at 26 three-star and five-star hotels found expired milk, rotten vegetables, poorly stored meat and other food safety violations. Officials also flagged problems with labelling, food segregation, storage and kitchen hygiene, and issued notices to the establishments.
