Berhampur: In a major crackdown during the festive season, police unearthed a gambling den and arrested 17 persons indulging in these illegal activities in Odisha’s Berhampur city.
Sources Bada Bazar police raided a house at Laxmi Nrusingh Sahi late on Thursday night and apprehended the gamblers. A whopping Rs 5.18 lakh in cash was seized from the accused during the raid.
Sources revealed that several well-known businessmen and bookies are among those arrested.
The operation was led by Town SDPO Priya Ranjan Chhotray and Bada Bazar IIC Baba Shankar Saraf.
All 17 accused have been detained for questioning, and further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the illegal network.
Police said the action is part of a wider drive to curb organised gambling, especially during the festive season.
