Global Alert: One Lakh Jump In Positive Corona Cases In Just 4 Days, Says WHO
A little over a lakh have recovered
First the good news. The number of coronavirus patients who have recovered worldwide has crossed one lakh and now stands at 102,429, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has informed.
On a negative note, however, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the pandemic is “accelerating” with one lakh new cases popping up in just 4 days.
As on Tuesday morning, the number of positive cases detected across the world was 381,744 and the death toll stood at 16,558 (a death rate of roughly 4.34%).
The WHO chief the exponential growth of cases was more worrying. The first one lakh cases took 67 days. The number reached two lakh in the next 11 days while it reached three lakh in just 4 more days.
He, however, added that the trajectory of the pandemic can still be changed. Earlier, he had advised countries to “test, test and test” in order to curb this disease. But he acknowledged that many poorer nations are still struggling to take more aggressive measures due to a lack of resources and access to tests.
While the epicentre has shifted from China to Europe, the US with 46,145 cases has reached the 3rd position after China and Italy.
Deaths in Italy have crossed 6,000.
