Gobinda Sahu Death Being Probed As Per NHRC Directive, Odisha Minister Informs Assembly
Bhubaneswar: Investigation into the death of Gobinda Sahu, the prime accused in school teacher Mamita Meher murder case, is being conducted as per the directive of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Odisha Assembly was informed on Monday.
Minister of State for Home Tusharkanti Behera gave this information in the House in reply to an adjournment motion by BJP chief whip Mohan Charan Majhi and others over probe into the mysterious death of Sahu in Kantabanji sub-jail in Balangir district on December 20, 2022.
He said Sahu, an undertrial prisoner, was found hanging from the railing of the prison’s kitchen window in the forenoon of December 20, 2022. A case of unnatural death was registered at Kantabanji police station following written complaint by the jailor and prison superintendent, he said.
The probe in the case was later handed over to the state Crime Branch, the Minister said, judicial probe is also underway by the judicial magistrate, Kantabanji.
The postmortem report of Sahu showed that the Cause of the death of the deceased is due to hanging caused by suspension of body with a soft ligature material around the neck, Behera said.
During investigation, some papers were recovered from the left pocket of the winter jacket of deceased Sahu, whose death is being investigated from all angles, the Minister added.
