New Delhi: Union home minister Amit Shah will speak in Parliament on the issue of police action against students and others who participated in the “Sansad Chalo” march in Delhi on July 20 on condition that the Opposition does not disrupt his speech or the discussion that follows.

“The offer made by the government is very clear. I have stated, government is ready to have a full and detailed discussion about the student movements and the activities related to that,” Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said on Monday, as reported by ANI.

While emphasising the need for an uninterrupted parliamentary process, he cautioned the Opposition against disruptions during official statements.

“My only point, very clearly made to the Opposition is, while the discussion and the reply is being made, they should not create any disturbances to distract the house or to prevent the statement of the honourable home minister,” Rijiju said.

“Once discussion begins, we must have a threadbare discussion,” he added.

His remarks came after Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi stepped up his attack on the government over the alleged police excesses against students.

Demanding an investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court, Rahul alleged that pellet guns, nail-studded batons and tear gas shells were used against students who were protesting over their future. He further alleged that police personnel beat female students and that some minors suffered broken bones.

The Opposition has been disrupting proceedings in Parliament after the incident.

On Sunday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor spoke out against this, saying that Parliament should be allowed to proceed, urging Opposition members to carry out protests on the streets rather than within the House.
