Gurugram: A day after a car allegedly rammed into a woman biker and sped away on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road, police arrested accused Kalyan Bainsla in Rajasthan’s Dausa and added an attempt-to-murder charge to the case on Tuesday, ANI reported.

Bainsla was being brought back to Gurugram for questioning and further investigation.

The action followed the circulation of a video showing a white sedan abruptly swerving into the path of a woman riding an Aprilia RS 457. The impact sent her crashing to the road, while her motorcycle slid across the surface, producing a trail of sparks. The car did not stop and was allegedly driven away from the spot.

Police initially registered the case under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving and causing injury. Following an examination of CCTV footage, investigators added Section 109, which relates to attempt to murder and provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, News18 reported.

CCTV Footage Leads To Stronger Charge

Gurugram Police took suo motu cognisance after the video became widely available online. Personnel from Sector 56 police station examined surveillance footage to establish how the collision occurred. Three teams were subsequently deployed to locate the accused.

Police had earlier confirmed that Bainsla had been identified and said the attempt-to-murder provision was added two days after the incident on the basis of the CCTV evidence.

“Flouting the law will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Gurugram Police is committed to taking strict action against the accused,” the police said.

The woman, identified as Sia, alleged that the authorities had failed to act despite the incident being recorded. She questioned how residents of Gurugram and Delhi could feel secure if clear evidence did not result in prompt action.

“He thinks he will just hit a woman and speed away and nothing would happen to him,” she said, describing the incident as both a hit-and-run and an attempt to murder.

Sia said she would continue pursuing the case and wanted to “set an example”. Her father, Rohshan Chauhan, also said the family would not stop until the accused was punished.

Accused, Lawyer Deny Allegations

Bainsla, speaking in a separate video interview, said he had not known whether the person struck was a man or a woman. He alleged that only one side of the matter had been highlighted and questioned the absence of footage involving one of Sia’s male friends, NDTV reported.

“I felt very sorry for that girl,” he said.

Sia rejected the claim, saying he would have stopped to help if he had genuinely felt remorse. She said the crash could have caused severe injuries or even death.

Bainsla’s lawyer, Naveen Bainsla, denied that the incident was a hit-and-run and blamed overspeeding and alleged racing by bikers.

“This is not a hit-and-run case; it is a matter of negligence. It happened purely due to overspeeding and reckless behaviour—they were racing against each other. There was a large group of bikers — about 20-30 riders. Instead of following road rules, they were speeding and performing stunts. They were taunting and harassing other vehicles, provoking them to race or overtake. The collision between the car and the bike occurred simply because of the speed at which they were driving. It is strictly a case of negligence — nothing more to it than that.”

He added: “Kalyan Bainsla is from my village. He is a very good man; he is a national and international Kabaddi player. There hasn’t been a single complaint against his family to date; they are a very socially respected family. They were not drinking. It happened at 7 in the morning. His family members were with him. Claims about drinking are completely false. He is a gym trainer and a gym owner. It was simply a case where both parties were at fault — the riders and him. They were racing at high speeds, lost control, and the vehicles collided. The police are currently investigating the matter. We will face whatever further action follows.”
