New Delhi: A first officer with Air India, close to turning 40, died unexpectedly in Bali on Wednesday due to a heart attack that struck while he was on his scheduled off-duty rest.
Airline sources confirmed he had commanded a flight from Delhi to Bali the day before, on Tuesday, PTI reported.
An Air India spokesperson recounted the sequence: “He was on scheduled crew rest in Bali when he complained of severe discomfort at his hotel.”
“He was immediately taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with having suffered a heart attack. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he could not be saved,” the spokesperson continued.
Air India is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its cockpit crew members in Bali, the spokesperson said.
Further details could not be immediately ascertained.
The officer had passed all obligatory health screenings per aviation rules only months earlier, noted an airline source.
There was no known pre-existing medical condition, the official said and added that the pilot had been operating well within the flying-hours limitations prescribed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
