Heavy Rain Cuts Off 18 Villages In Odisha’s 2 Districts

Bhubaneswar: As many as 18 villages in two districts of Odisha were cut off from outer world as approached roads to those were washed away by rainwater.

According to sources, around 15 villages under Phiringia block of Kandhamal district were inundated due to heavy rain since Friday. The people of Katramal, Sigadi, Surakan, Kanapa, Baraputuli, Adising, Sagada and other villages in the block have been confined to their houses as rainwater has left the area waterlogged.

These villages are connected by Mundasahi-Sagada road that is connected to the block headquarters. A small bridge constructed over a nullah served as the connecting link among the villages.

But the approach roads to the bridge on both sides have been washed away due to heavy inflow of rainwater following incessant rains since Friday, the sources said.

Similarly, the communication to three villages in Mohana block of Gajapati district have been severed. A temporary wooden bridge over Harabhangi river in the area has been washed away. As the river was in spate due to heavy rain in upper catchment area, there was a strong current which swept away the wooden bridge, the sources said.

The locals feared that if rain does not stop on Saturday night, they will remain waterlogged for several days as the villages are located in low-lying area down the river.
