Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind may lash some parts of Keonjhar district in Odisha by 5.49 pm, the India Meteorological Department (MD) informed on Sunday.
The weather agency has issued a red warning for the district. There could be minor damage to thatched houses, power and communication lines, standing crops, banana, papaya trees and waterlogging in low-lying areas, it said.
People have been advised to avoid trees and instead take shelter in concrete structures. Farming operations may be temporarily suspended, it added.
In its midday bulletin, the IMD has forecast thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph and heavy rain at one or two places in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on Sunday.
Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam.
Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm activity and lightning till June 26.
