Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm activity and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur districts of Odisha on Wednesday (July 9).

Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

According to the weather agency, a low-pressure area persists over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand and is expected to move slowly west northwestwards across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh during the next 2 days. This system, along with a monsoon trough extending from Punjab to the Bay of Bengal, is triggering rainfall activity over the state.

It further stated that squally weather may prevail with wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph along and off Odisha coasts during the next 24 hours, when the sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough.

While heavy rain is likely to resume in the state from July 13 again, thunderstorm activity may continue for four more days. On July 10-11-12-13, thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

On July 13, Heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts. Heavy rain may continue across the state during the subsequent two days with no large change thereafter, it added.
