Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain is likely to continue in Odisha as the depression persisted over the state even as a fresh low pressure may form during Durga Puja, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.
In a special bulletin, the IMD said that an upper air cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the north Andaman Sea by September 30.
Under its influence, a new low-pressure area is expected to develop over the north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal around October 1.
The system is expected to trigger heavy rainfall in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and neighbouring states in the coming days. Fishermen have also been cautioned about possible rough sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, the depression over south coastal Odisha has continued to move westwards at a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours.
The system was centred over south interior Odisha, near latitude 19.3°N and longitude 84.2°E about 50 km east-northeast of Gunupur, 70 km west of Gopalpur, 130 km south of Phulbani,
130 km east-southeast of Bhawanipatna in Odisha, and 230 km east of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh.
The system is likely to continue moving nearly westwards across south Odisha and into Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours. During this movement, it is expected to weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area, thereby reducing its intensity.
In view of the new weather system taking shape in the region, several parts of Odisha are likely to be lashed by heavy rain and thunderstorm till the morning of October 4. The intensity of rain may decline for three days from September 28 to 30.
In next 24 hours, heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Bargarh, and Malkangiri. The IMD has issued a yellow warning for these districts.
Similarly, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30- 40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal during the period.
