Bhubaneswar: Odisha, which is staring at a possible flood-like situation with Jalaka river breaching the danger mark, can expect some relief as heavy rain is likely to subside from Saturday.
However, this is short-lived as a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over northwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal around September 13, according to India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) extended range outlook.
“The existing low pressure area over central parts of India (North Chhattisgarh & adjoining East Madhya Pradesh) is likely to move west-northwestwards along the seasonal monsoon trough during the next 48 hours. There is also a high probability of its intensification into a well-marked low-pressure area over South Rajasthan & adjoining North Gujarat during middle of week 1 (September 5-11) with low probability of its further intensification into a depression over Gujarat & neighbourhood,” the national forecaster said on Thursday.
“There is a likelihood of formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood around September 8. There is also a likelihood of formation of a fresh low pressure area over northwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal around September 13,” it added.
Meanwhile, the weather agency has warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh on Friday.
Thunderstorm along with lightning accompanied and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely to occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
While there is no heavy rain warning thereafter, thunderstorm activity may continue in the state till September 9.
On September 6, thunderstorm along with lightning accompanied and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
On September 7-8, similar weather conditions my prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
On September 9, thunderstorm along with lightning accompanied and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
Light to moderate rain may continue at many places across the state during the subsequent 5 days, it added.
Notably, Odisha has been receiving heavy rain due to an active southwest monsoon and a dozen low-pressure systems, which have formed over the Bay of Bengal this monsoon. The low-pressure areas forming over the Bay of Bengal move in the west-northwestwards direction, causing heavy rain in the upper catchment areas of several rivers in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, leading to a flood situation in north Odisha districts.
