Bhubaneswar: Widespread rainfall is likely in North Odisha with light to moderate rain at many places in southern districts during the next 24, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at one or two places in Jharsuguda and Bargarh. There is also a forecast for heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) at one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Sonepur, Deogarh, Angul, Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj till 8.30 am on Wednesday, according to the midday bulletin.

Light to moderate rain/thundershower is also likely at most places in interior Odisha and at many places in coastal districts of the state, it further said.

The heavy rainfall is likely to continue during the subsequent 24 hours with warning for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts. Light to moderate rain/thundershower may occur at many places in North interior Odisha, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and at a few places in the rest of the state during this period.

While there is no further warning, light to moderate rain/thundershower may continue at many places in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Sambalpur and Deogarh and at a few places in rest districts of Odisha on June 29 and at a few places in all districts on June 30.

Under the influence of strong southwest monsoon current and low pressure area over north Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph is very likely over Northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal, along and off Odisha coast during next 24 hours. “Fishermen are advised to not to venture into sea area of along and off Odisha coast, Northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal during this period,” it added.

The MeT office further said that conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab during next 2 days. “Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm & lightning very likely to continue over the region during next 5 days. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh on June 29, 30 and July 1. Isolated heavy rainfall also likely over parts of East India on June 27 and over northeast India during next 5 days,” it added.

Notably, rainfall deficit for the country came down to 23 per cent on Monday, an improvement of 10 per cent through the weekend, due to formation of a low-pressure area, first of the season, which now lies over north Chhattisgarh & neighbourhood. It is very likely to move westnorthwestwards towards north Madhya Pradesh during next 2 days, the IMD said in its morning bulletin.
