New Delhi: Flights can be affordable for flyers in India soon. They may no longer have to pay hidden charges. The government is taking steps to do away with the extra charges. The government, according to reports, has directed airlines to make sure that at least 60% of the seats are kept free of charges for selection.

Several airlines usually ask for additional charges to be paid for preferred seats. These charges are reflected at the time of booking or online check-in.

The ministry has also asked airlines to also ensure that flyers with same ticket number must sit together. They must be allotted seats adjacent to each other, the directive states.

The government has stressed on strict compliance with flyers’ rights.  This holds significance in case of delays, cancellations and when boarding is not allowed.

Airlines must prominently display these rights on its portal, apps and other platforms.

Passengers must also be communicated about their entitlements in regional languages.
