Bhubaneswar: In a major development amid Middle East crisis, crude oil tanker MT Flora laden with over 2.5 lakh metric tons of unrefined crude oil sourced from Oman has successfully docked at Paradip Port in Odisha.
This was stated to be the first major crude oil vessel to reach Paradip Port since the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States intensified, leading to severe disruptions in global energy logistics.
Following the conflict, Iran has effectively closed or heavily restricted the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint through which about 20% of the world’s oil normally flows—using it as leverage against the United States and its allies.
As a result, tanker transits got drastically reduced, with only limited safe passages reported in recent days, causing global oil prices to surge and raising concerns over supply shortages.
MT Flora’s safe transit and arrival at Paradip Port is seen as a positive indicator for sustaining refinery operations. The port serves key facilities, including the Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOCL) Paradip Refinery, playing a crucial role in meeting domestic fuel demands in the eastern region and beyond.
It may be noted that the war in the Middle East is now affecting households in Odisha, as shortage of LPG cylinders has caused inconvenience in many areas.
