Bhubaneswar: One of fashion trends catching up in the city like wild fire is hair colour and highlights. While colours are easy to decide, highlighting needs some thinking and expertise.

City-based Makeup artist Subhashree Hati, known popularly as Romma, said the whole colour theory for hair revolves around few basics only. “What has changed in years and in trend is the way we play around with the colors,” she added. She believes the most important fact about choosing the right shades depends on the skin tone, personality and one’s occupation.

“Browns n blondes are great for medium to fair skin tones they look amazing n makes you look young n fresh where as deep reds n burgundies are great for darker skin tones,” she added.

Here are some highlight techniques to revamp your hair:

Baby Highlights- Delicate and subtle, they are created by using a very fine colour-weaving technique. Best thing about baby highlights is that it can be applied on any hair colour. It lightens the hair without too much commitment.

Face-framing Highlights- This is quite an interesting and simple look where most of the hair is one uniform tone, with highlight of a single colour framing the face.

Balayage Highlight- If you follow Bolly diva Priyanka Chopra, you would know what balayage highlight is. She carries it off like a boss! It involves a free-hand technique for a dark to light natural gradient effect.

Ombre Highlight- Seen mostly among youngsters these days, ombre is the trendiest highlight styles. The darker colour is on the top while the lighter or contrasting colour blends in gradually towards the end or tip of the hair.

Underlight– Yet to really be a rage in the city, it is already a trend in other major cities. This technique is all about strategic placement of colour which creates a deceiving effect. Turning hair to one side reveals the colour and then it’s gone! It’s hidden in the inside layer of the hair. This highlight needs minimum maintenance and there are no regrowth issues, which makes it a fad among fashionistas.

Dip-dyed Highlight- As the name suggests, this highlight appears as if it were dipped in colour. The dipped portion can be of any length and any colour combination can be used- from subtle to fierce. You can team up black with blue denim or millennium pink or violet with magenta.

Subhashree said silver streaks is another trendy Color style which is quite popular abroad.

Hair colour and highlights are also subject to season. Subhashree said she chooses to keep her hair light brown with medium blonde highlights. “During winter, global hair with light brown streaks is my comfort shade,” she further said.

The highlights, however, need extra care. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Use UV protection products, leave-in conditioners and serums
  • Use good quality shampoo, which is sulphate-free.
  • If you go swimming, wear a swimming cap.
  • Use toning shampoo for extra shine and gloss.
  • Deep condition your hair regularly for a mirror-like shine.
  • Use cold water while washing hair.
