New Delhi: The Supreme Court witnessed high drama on Friday when a man, appearing as a petitioner-in-person, verbally abused Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, threw papers at the Bench and disrupted proceedings before being escorted out by security.
The incident took place before a bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe.
The atmosphere in the courtroom turned tense after the petitioner, identified as Prabal Pratap, addressed the judges in an unusually aggressive and dominating tone.
“Mr judicial servant. I order you to order the registration of an FIR against the ACP… Lucknow,” the complainant said.
Justice Viswanathan was in disbelief.
“You are ordering me? You are ordering us?” he asked the petitioner.
“That is all from my side. Everything is on record,” the petitioner stated.
The man then flung his case papers into the air and began using abusive language against the Chief Justice, who was not part of the bench, Live Law reported.
The two judges remained composed, not reacting to the man’s outburst, as security personnel removed him from the courtroom to restore order.
He was detained in the DSP’s office inside the courtroom for some time, but no action was taken against him.
The bizarre scenes unfolded during the hearing of a petition challenging an order passed by the Allahabad High Court.
Despite the chaos he created and offensive language he used against the judges and CJI Kant, the bench decided not to initiate contempt or any other coercive proceedings against the petitioner, reported NDTV.
“We do not propose to take any action against him. As far as the merits of the case are concerned, we have perused the records. We find no good grounds to interfere with the impugned order. The Special Leave Petition is dismissed,” Justice Viswanathan said, pronouncing the order.
“He is very disturbed… it’s all frustration. We only have sympathies for him,” the judge later remarked.
