New Delhi: The national Capital was on high alert after a car exploded near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro station, killing at least 10 people and injuring 24 others, reported India Today.

Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were also put on high alert after the blast.

It was a high intensity blast, according to Delhi Police. The blast took place around 6.52 pm on a slow-moving vehicle, a Hyundai i20.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Guard (NSG) arrived at the spot to assist local police.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed about the blast by Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha.

Shah then spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to update him about the incident.

“A call was received regarding an explosion in a car near Gate number 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station,” the Delhi Fire Department said.

“We got information that there was a blast in a car near Chandni Chowk Metro Station. We responded immediately, and seven units were sent to the spot. At 7.29 pm, the fire was brought under control,” informed Deputy Chief Fire Officer AK Malik.

Photos and videos shared on social media platforms showed a van with its doors blown off, a completely mangled car, another with a smashed windscreen and crumpled bodies on the ground.

Eyewitnesses who were around the blast site at a busy time of the evening said they had never heard such a loud explosion.

“I fell three times due to the explosion. It felt as if we were all going to die,” a local shopkeeper said.

Another person saw body parts on the road. “When we went near after the explosion, we saw body parts spread on the road. No one could figure out what happened.
