Mumbai: A 37-year-old traffic policeman, Siddeshwar Mali, was dragged atop a car’s bonnet for around 20 km in Navi Mumbai on Saturday afternoon as he tried to stop it on the suspicion that the driver had taken drugs, officials said on Sunday.
According to the FIR, Mali was on bandobast duty at Koparkhairane-Vashi lane with another cop on account of the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and landed on the vehicle’s bonnet as the driver attempted to run over him and continued to drive even as he clung dangerously to it. “Mali was in front of the car and jumped onto the bonnet to save his life,” Midday quoted a cop from Vashi Police Station as saying.
The traffic cop later fell off the vehicle. Some policemen chased the car driver and managed to stop him near Masala Market at APMC.
The 22-year-old car driver, identified as Aditya Bembde, was later arrested and booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), and 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), and under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police said. He is a resident of Nerul.
