Cuttack: With a record 92 people testing coronavirus positive in the last 24 hours, Cuttack district now has the highest number of active cases in the state.
While its total has spiralled to 311, with 128 recoveries and one death, the district now has 182 patients. Khurda (334) and Ganjam (678) districts, which have reported more COVID-19 cases than Cuttack, are a distant second and third with 115 and 95 active patients respectively.
Cuttack reported its first COVID-19 case on April 3 when a man from the Millenium City tested positive for the deadly virus. He had attended the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi’s Nizamuddin Markaz Mosque in early March. Almost after a gap of one month, another person tested positive for the virus on May 5. He was a Surat returnee and a native of Tigiria. Since then, cases are being detected in the district almost every alternate day.
In May, 118 people were found to have contracted the virus with the highest of 20 on the last day of the month. From June 1 to June 14, 191 people have tested COVID-19 positive. With Odisha reporting cases in three-figure numbers almost every day, the month ahead can prove to be challenging for the Cuttack administration, despite more patients being detected in rural areas and quarantine centres.
