Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday strongly criticised an incident in West Bengal in which Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was allegedly pelted with eggs, blaming the BJP for nurturing a climate of political violence, PTI reported.
Yadav, whose party has 37 Lok Sabha members, urged both the judiciary and the Lok Sabha Speaker to take swift note of the episode, calling it “highly condemnable”.
Moitra was reportedly confronted by BJP supporters who allegedly hurled eggs at her while she visited Nadia district in West Bengal.
In a post on X, Yadav accused the BJP of abusing its authority in states it governs and said that “especially in West Bengal” the party was generating a “poisonous atm
osphere of political violence” and politicising the police.
“The people of the country are deeply angry and outraged by this negative and aggressive behaviour,” Yadav added.
He also claimed that many within the BJP — leaders and rank-and-file alike — disapprove of such assaults because they worry similar acts could be directed at them in states where the party lacks power or if it loses power in future.
“The BJP’s senior leaders may remain protected within their security cover, but ordinary party workers will be left to face the public anger on the streets,” he said.
Yadav reiterated that the Lok Sabha Speaker should immediately take cognisance of the matter, describing the episode as “highly condemnable”. He included a video of Moitra with his post.
Moitra had alleged on Wednesday that BJP workers threw eggs and chanted slogans against her during a protest outside the home of party MLA Alifa Ahmed in Nadia district.
She said she went to Palashi in Kaliganj to attend a TMC meeting at Ahmed’s house when a group of protesters assembled outside, shouting “go back” and “chor”, and allegedly pelted her with eggs.
“After the change of government in the state, the law and order has collapsed. The police administration is a mute spectator. The BJP has now planned to attack me. These are not ordinary people; they are BJP workers,” she alleged.
