Dhaka: Another Hindu, a businessman, was stabbed to death in Bangladesh on Monday, barely 48 hours ahead of general elections in the country.

Sushen Chandra Shekhar (62), was stabbed to death inside his shop in the Mymensingh district late on Monday night, the police said, as reported by India Today.

Shekhar was a resident of the Southkanda village and was in the rice trading business. He owned ‘Messrs Bhai Bhai Enterprise’ at Bogar Bazar intersection in the Trishal Upazila.

The incident occurred around 11 pm when Shekhar was working inside his shop, the police said. The unidentified assailants attacked him with sharp weapons, in what was clearly a targeted killing. After the murder, the attackers pulled down the shutter and fled the spot, leaving the body inside.

The murder was confirmed by Trishal Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Firoz Hossain, who said that a probe has been initiated to track and identify the perpetrators.

Several Hindus have been killed in Bangladesh since December, but the perpetrators are on the loose in most cases.

Serious concerns have been raised about the safety of minorities in the country, with general elections approaching.

It all started with the gruesome murder of Dipu Chandra Das on December 18, 2025. An employee of a textile factory, Das was lynched by a mob on false charges of blasphemy. His body was then tied to a tree and set on fire.

The incident raised international concerns over the rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh, especially since the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Another Hindu named Liton Chandra Ghosh (55), a trader, was also stabbed and set on fire by unidentified assailants. Ghosh later died in hospital.

As per a report by the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (Raag), quoted by News18, at least 15 Hindus have been killed in the 45-day period between early December 2025 and mid-January 2026.

Apart from this, property worth lakhs has been destroyed, along with places of worship. Most Hindu families in the country are now living in a state of fear. The interim government in Bangladesh, under Muhammad Yunus, does not seem to be taking the matter seriously enough. This has also resulted in deterioration of ties with India.
