Hirakud Sizzles At 44°C By 2.30PM As IMD Predicts Return Of Heatwave To Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Heatwave along with hot and humid conditions is likely to return to Odisha this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.

According to the midday bulletin, the day temperature is likely to rise by 2-3°C during the next 5 days.

The prediction came even as Hirakud sizzled at 44°C by 2.30 pm. Jharsuguda was close second at 43.8°C, followed by Sambalpur (43.4°C). Bhubaneswar and Rourkela recorded 39.6°C while Keonjhar was at 38.4°C. The mercury had soared to 40°C and above at 17 places in the state the previous day.

May 19: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati and Mayurbhanj.
May 20: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Angul and Dhenkanal
May 21: Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Dhenkanal, Sonepur and Balangir
May 22: Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur and Balangir.
May 23: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.

Heatwave Warning

May 20: Jharsuguda, Boudh and Mayurbhanj
May 21: Jharsuguda, Boudh, Angul, Sambalpur, Balasore and Bhadrak.
May 22: Jharsuguda, Boudh, Angul, Sambalpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal.
May 23: Boudh, Angul, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Balangir

The MeT further stated thunderstorm activity along with gusty wind may continue in the state till May 25 with orange and yellow warnings issued for several districts.

May 19

Orange warning: Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) is likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur.

Yellow warning: Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 30-40 kmph may prevail in afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nabarangpur.

May 20
