Dhaka: Amid rising incidents of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, at least three houses of a Hindu family were set on fire in Pirojpur district’s Dumritala village.

The houses belonged to members of the Saha family — Palash Kanti, Shib, Dipak, Shyamalendu and Ashok.

Saha family members who spoke to NDTV over phone from Dhaka said they are still in fear and trauma.

They were initially trapped as doors had been locked from outside when they realised fire was raging in the early hours of December 28. Thankfully, all members of the affected families managed to escape by cutting through tin sheets and bamboo fencing.

However, the fire completely gutted their homes and destroyed all belongings including furniture, cash, land records, educational certificates and other important documents. Their pets couldn’t be rescued and were killed.

Videos circulating on social media show local residents trying to douse the massive flames as the fire rapidly spreads across houses.

An attack on Hindu minorities continues to raise serious concern. In Dumritola village of Pirojpur district, a house belonging to a Hindu family was reportedly set ablaze by an extremist Islamist mob.

According to local authorities, the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.

Attackers allegedly stuffed cloth into one of the rooms and set it ablaze, according to local people.

Pirojpur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Manzur Ahmed Siddiqui, who visited the site, assured the complainants that the fire incident will be investigated promptly.

Police have arrested five suspects so far.

The incident in southern Bangladesh, around 240 km from capital city Dhaka, comes over a week after the mob lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh.

Amrit Mondal aka Samrat, another Hindu man, was killed by a mob in Rajbari town on December 24. The Bangladesh government, while condemning the incident, said it was not a communal attack as Samrat was accused of several cases of murder and extortion.

According to a report by the Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM), at least 71 incidents related to blasphemy allegations against Hindu minorities were reported in Bangladesh from June to December this year.

Cases from 30 districts, including Chandpur, Chattogram, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Sunamganj, Khulna, Comilla, Gazipur, Tangail and Sylhet, have been mentioned.

Blasphemy allegations in Bangladesh often resulted in police action, mob violence and punishment, according to HRCBM.
