Bhubaneswar: The high humidity level has made the prevailing sultry weather conditions more unbearable for people of coastal areas in Odisha.
On Wednesday, the state capital recorded 32°C with humidity at 73.6% by 8.30 am. The mercury also shot up in other coastal areas with Puri recording 34.4°C this morning, followed by Balasore at 33°C and Gopalpur and Paradip at 31.8°C each.
By 11.30 am, the mercury levels in Bhubaneswar rose to 36.2°C with humidity at 53.6%, according to senior meteorologist Umasankar Das.
The city has also been witnessing nor’wester-induced heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning in the afternoon hours for two days.
According to IMD’s midday bulletin, hot and humid conditions may continue to prevail in Odisha with the progress of southwest monsoon stalled over Mumbai, Ahilyanagar (Maharashtra); Adilabad (Telangana); Bhawanipatna and Puri (Odisha) and Sandheads (West Bengal).
The weather agency has warned of hot and humid weather conditions at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts from June 4-June 8.
Heatwave may also prevail at one or two places in Balasore and Puri on June 5 and Balasore, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Bhadrak on June 6.
Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at several places in the state on June 4-5. There is a yellow warning for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, Sambalpur, Nayagarh and Khurda districts on June 4 and Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati on June 5.
