Meghalaya: Days after her marriage to Raja Raghuvanshi, 26-year-old Sonam who now stands accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, had sent text messages to her lover that she did not like her husband getting intimate with her, according to sources.
The case, which reads like a crime thriller, unfolded as details of a deadly plot emerged through police investigations and leaked chats.
Sonam married Raja Raghuvanshi on May 10, 2025, in Indore. Less than two weeks later, the newlyweds travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. However, the trip turned deadly. On May 23, the couple went missing after checking out of a homestay near Nongriat village in Cherrapunji. A frantic search ensued, ending in tragedy when Raja’s body was discovered in a deep gorge in a hilly forest area.
Initially believed to be an accident, suspicions grew when Sonam disappeared. She resurfaced days later, surrendering to the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur. What followed was a shocking confession: Sonam admitted to hiring contract killers — including her lover, Raj Kushwaha — to murder her husband.
Investigators revealed Sonam and Raj had been in contact even after her marriage. Chats recovered by police expose Sonam’s disdain for Raja and her discomfort with their relationship. Shockingly, she confessed to Raj about distancing herself from Raja even before their wedding and plotting his murder just three days after their marriage.
Police sources said Sonam deliberately chose a remote location in Meghalaya to carry out the crime. Four accused — Raj Kushwaha, Aakash Rajpoot, Vikas alias Vicky, and Anand — were arrested for their alleged involvement.
An autopsy confirmed Raja suffered multiple sharp injuries, including fatal wounds to the front and back of his head, ruling out any chance of accidental death.
The case has sparked widespread public shock and debate over betrayal, obsession, and the extremes of a doomed relationship. Authorities continue their probe as the accused await legal proceedings.
