New Delhi: Afghan media outlets on Wednesday claimed that former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was “mysteriously killed” while in custody at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The startling allegation spread rapidly on social media, with some users sharing posts about Khan’s purported death.

However, Pakistani authorities have strongly denied the claim, calling it “false” and urging the public not to fall for unverified rumours.

The controversy emerged the day after thousands of supporters of Khan’s political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), gathered outside Adiala Jail demanding official confirmation of his health status.

Several attempts to meet him has also been reportedly rejected by the authorities citing ‘security concerns.’ On Tuesday night (Nov 25), Khan’s sisters Noreen Khan, Aleema Khan, and Uzma Khan huddled outside the prison along with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters and demanded that authorities allow them to meet their brother, reported WION.

‘Khan’s sister dragged by hair, not allowed to meet him’

According to reports, in a letter to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar, Khan’s sisters accused the policemen of using ‘brutal and orchestrated’ violence against them ‘without provocation.’ “We peacefully protested over concerns for his health condition. We neither blocked roads nor obstructed public movement, nor engaged in any unlawful conduct. Yet, without warning or provocation, the streetlights in the area were abruptly switched off, deliberately casting the scene into darkness. What followed was a brutal and orchestrated assault by Punjab police personnel,” Noreen Niazi said as per the WION report. “At the age of 71, I was seized by my hair, thrown violently to the ground, and dragged across the road,” she added.

Khan — a former cricketer turned politician — has been incarcerated at Adiala since August 2023 after being convicted in multiple cases, including the “cipher case” which saw him sentenced to 10 years in jail.
