In A First, TPCODL Links Power Network In Odisha To National DigiPIN Grid

Bhubaneswar: TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL), the joint venture between Tata Power and the Odisha government, has achieved a pioneering milestone by becoming the first power utility in India to integrate DigiPIN, the country’s advanced digital addressing system.

This move represents a major step forward in strengthening India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) within the power sector.

DigiPIN, developed collaboratively by the Department of Posts, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and IIT Hyderabad, introduces a user-friendly 10-character alphanumeric code that simplifies location identification. It replaces cumbersome latitude-longitude coordinates with a standardised, precise system that works effectively even in low-connectivity areas, promising to transform governance and service delivery across the nation.

TPCODL has embedded DigiPIN into its enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) to assign unique digital addresses to its vast network of assets. This integration builds on the company’s existing digital strengths, including Aadhaar-based verification and UPI payments, and is expected to greatly enhance operational efficiency, network monitoring, and response times for maintenance and power outages.

Commenting on the development, Arvind Singh, CEO of TPCODL, stated: “Digital Public Infrastructure forms the foundation of modern governance, ensuring inclusive and efficient delivery of essential services. At TPCODL, we remain fully aligned with the Government of India’s vision for a digitally empowered nation. Adopting DigiPIN represents our next important stride, reinforcing our digital systems, connecting them to the national addressing framework, and enabling smarter, data-driven decisions to improve power reliability and customer satisfaction.”

The initiative covers TPCODL’s entire operational area spanning over 29,354 sqkm. More than 93,000 transformers, over 1,500 ring main units (RMUs), and 19 lakh electricity poles have already been mapped with unique DigiPIN codes.

Key advantages of the adoption include:

>> High-precision mapping: Every 4m x 4m grid in the service area now carries a unique DigiPIN.
>> Offline functionality: The system operates fully without internet connectivity, supporting seamless field operations.
>> Improved service delivery: Consumers can share precise locations easily through government platforms, leading to faster complaint resolution and service requests.
>> Enhanced field operations: Teams benefit from accurate asset location and navigation, improving both efficiency and safety.

By linking the National Addressing Grid with its GIS platform, TPCODL has established a new standard for technology adoption in utility management, the company said, adding that this initiative underscores its dedication to innovation and excellence, aiming to provide reliable and future-ready power supply to consumers across central Odisha.
