Jammu: In a major success against cross-border narco-terrorism, the Jammu Police, along with the Border Security Force (BSF), seized a huge quantity of narcotics, valued at nearly Rs 40 crore, close to the International Border (IB) with Pakistan on Friday.
The drugs, suspected to have been dropped by a drone from Pakistan, were seized in the R S Pura sector in Jammu.
Troops of the 165 Bn BSF reported suspicious drone activity close to the border, following which a cordon and search operation was launched late on Friday, an official said. This was a joint operation by the Jammu Police and 165 Bn BSF.
“The search was launched at Nai Basti Karotana in the Baspur area of R S Pura in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. At first light, two yellow coloured packets of narcotics were recovered from the wheat fields,” the official said.
Each packet contained heroin. A recovery memo was prepared in the presence of a magistrate. The packets contained nearly 6.582 kg heroin worth about Rs 40 crore in the international market,
“It is clear that the narcotics were dropped by a drone from Pakistan. The packets were supposed to be picked up by a courier. A thorough investigation has been launched to trace the exact source and destination of the recovered contraband. The police is thoroughly examining both the backward and forward linkages in the case and more breakthroughs are expected,” the official added.
Criminal gangs on both sides of the border, linked to terror outfits in Pakistan, have been involved in the drone dropping of narcotics, weapons, ammunition and other contraband in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.
Security and intelligence agencies have claimed that these are converted efforts and the narcotics are used to fund terror activities in India.
