[In Pics, Watch] Clicked By Netizens: Jupiter, Closest To Earth In 59 Years

New Delhi: Gas giant Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, came closest to earth on Monday night in 59 years. Here are some photos of Jupiter snapped by netizens of the rare celestial event.

Jupiter attained ‘opposition’ on Monday night, rising in the east as the sun set in the west, placing the planet and the sun on opposite sides of the earth.

Jupiter’s ‘opposition’ occurs every 13 months, making the planet appear larger and brighter. Jupiter came to approximately 367 million miles from earth, the closest since 1963. The gas giant is approximately 600 million miles away from earth at its farthest point.
