Puri: The divine bathing of the sibling deities, which is a prelude to the nine-day Rath Yatra, began at Jagannath Temple here on Friday.
On this occasion, servitors pour 35 pots of sacred water on Lord Jagannath, 33 pots on Lord Balabhadra, 22 on Devi Subhadra and 18 on Sudarsan.
As per tradition, these 108 pots of water are collected from ‘Suna’ well near Sitala temple inside the temple premises and stored at a place called ‘Adibasha Gruha’. This water mixed with extracts of various aromatic herbs is used to bath the deities.
This ritual is carried out at the ‘Snana Mandapa’ (bating alter) where the Lords are brought after a series of early morning rituals in a ‘Pahandi’ (procession).
