Mumbai: The 18th edition of IPL has been suspended with immediate effect for one week amidst the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed.
The 58th match of IPL 2025, being played between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals on Thursday evening at Dharamshala, was abandoned midway after Pakistan tried to launch drone and missile attacks on several north Indian cities including Pathankot, which is 85 km from Dharamshala.
The BCCI said further updates regarding the revised schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
Sixteen more matches, including three playoffs and the final, remain to be played. The final was scheduled to be held at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on May 25. With the five-Test England tour scheduled in June, the BCCI will have its task cut out in finding extra days for the IPL.
“The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans ; while the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained in a detailed statement.
“While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country. The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation,” the statement said.
