Berhampur: A clerk posted at Kamalapur branch of Indian Bank in Odisha’s Ganjam district has been arrested for allegedly siphoning off Rs 6 lakh from customers’ deposits.
The arrested has been identified as Trinath Bisoi (40), a native of Sompeta in Andhra Pradesh. He had been working as a counter clerk at the branch for more than eight years and was living in a rented house near Gopalpur.
The fraud came to light during a routine audit last month when bank authorities found Rs 6 lakh missing in customer deposits, despite entries showing the amounts had been accepted. Following which, a complaint was lodged at Berhampur Cyber Crime and Economic Offences police station.
Subsequent investigation revealed Bisoi’s signatures on the disputed deposit entries in the register. One affected customer, Raghupati, also noticed that several deposits he had made in recent months were not reflected in his account balance. Upon examining his deposit receipts, he too found Bisoi’s signatures on them.
Sensing that he was under scrutiny, Bisoi went on leave and fled to his native place.
Police, however, tracked him down and arrested him on Monday. He reportedly admitted to the embezzlement during questioning.
Further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the misappropriation.
