Dhaka: An official of the Indian High Commission in Chattogram, Bangladesh, was found dead inside the mission premises on Tuesday, according to news agency PTI, which cited police officials.
The deceased, identified as Naren Dhar, served as an Assistant Protocol Officer at the Indian mission.
“We have been told he was Naren Dhar and serving as the assistant protocol officer at the mission,” port city police spokesman Aminur Rashid told reporters.
Police said Dhar, who was reportedly in his late 30s and hailed from Chandigarh, was found dead early in the morning near a bathroom door on the second floor of the old visa centre building of the diplomatic mission.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commission in Chattogram had not commented on the death at the time of reporting.
Police initially suspected the death may have been caused by cardiac arrest, though officials said the post-mortem would determine the exact cause.
“The post-mortem report, however, will confirm the cause of the death,” Rashid, also the Assistant Police Commissioner of the city, said.
He added that police reached the spot soon after being informed in the morning and sent the body to the state-run Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy after completing the necessary formalities, as Dhar was a foreign national posted at the diplomatic mission.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (North Zone) Amirul Islam told The Daily Star that a case of unnatural death would be registered in connection with the incident, and that Dhar’s body would be handed over to officials of the Assistant High Commission of India after the post-mortem.
