Mumbai: Marine Commandos (Marcos) of the Indian Navy boarded a vessel in the Western Indian Ocean and seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics. Indian Navy’s frontline frigate INS Tarkash, was alerted by the Navy’s P8I aircraft of suspicious vessels in the area. The frigate altered course to intercept the vessels.
“Finally, after carrying out checks of all vessels, a specialist boarding team, along with Marcos, boarded a Dhow and carried out a search. Several sealed packets were discovered. These carried 2,386 kg hashish and 121 kg heroin. The packets were stored in different cargo holds and compartments onboard the vessel. The Dhow was subsequently brought under the control of INS Tarkash, and the crew underwent comprehensive questioning regarding their modus operandi and the presence of similar vessels in the area,” a senior official said.
During the operation, the ship also launched its integral helicopter to keep a lookout on the activities of the other vessels in the area.
The INS Tarkash has been deployed in the Western Indian Ocean since January 2025 for Maritime Security Operations, The frigate is actively supporting Bahrain-based Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, which is part of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). The ship is participating in the multi-national forces’ joint focus operation ‘Anzac Tiger’.
“This seizure underscores the effectiveness and professionalism of the Indian Navy in deterring and disrupting illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking at sea. The Indian Navy’s participation in multinational exercises aims to promote security, stability, and prosperity across international waters in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR),” the official said.
