Puri: Odisha’s Pilgrim town of Puri will witness an action-packed portrayal of Indian Navy’s maritime capabilities, air power and operational excellence on Wednesday (December 4).

The Operational Demonstration as part of Navy Day 2024 off the coast of Puri, will showcase the strength and versatility of its naval fleet. This event is not only a tribute to India’s rich maritime heritage, but also an opportunity for the general public to witness first-hand the world of naval operations, a realm often hidden from public view.

President Droupadi Murmu, will be the Chief Guest at the event, hosted by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.

Hailing the valiant personnel of the Indian Navy on the Navy Day, Modi said India takes ride in India’s rich maritime history. “On Navy Day, we salute the valiant personnel of the Indian Navy who protect our seas with unmatched courage and dedication,” he posted on X.

5 things to know

1. The day commemorates the bold naval operations carried out on Karachi Harbour during the 1971 Indo-Pak war that resulted in the sinking of several Pakistani ships. The successful execution of Operation Trident not only showcased India’s naval capabilities but also marked a significant military achievement.

2. It is the second time the Indian Navy has chosen a location outside a major naval station to showcase its power and capabilities. The first-ever demonstration of this scale further underscores Odisha’s deep maritime roots and Indian Navy’s historic ties with the state.

3. The event will highlight the Navy’s strategic capabilities, its role as a key guardian of India’s maritime security and commitment to regional peace and stability.

4. The theme for Indian Navy Day 2024 is “Strength and Power through Innovation and Indigenisation”, which emphasises the Navy’s commitment to self-reliance, technological advancement, and innovation in enhancing its operational capabilities.

5. The display will feature over 15 ships, submarines, and more than 40 aircraft, with support from Marine Commandos (MARCOS) and personnel from the Indian Army. Highlights include aerial manoeuvres by MiG-29K and Hawk fighter jets, combat exercises by MARCOS, demonstrations of submarine operations, amphibious landings, and rocket firing from warships.

In the evening, the Eastern Naval Command Band will perform the traditional Beating Retreat Ceremony, followed by a precision drill and a drone and laser show.

Murmu was arrived in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening. After a night halt at Raj Bhawan, she left for Puri at around 9 this morning. She will be visiting Shree Jagannath Temple for a darshan of the sibling deities and will also attend the 75th anniversary celebrations of Gopabandhu Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya.

Later in the afternoon, the President will proceed to the Blue Flag Beach to attend the Navy Day celebrations.
