New Delhi: Vikrant Thakur, a 42-year-old Australian man of Indian origin, admitted in court to killing his wife Supriya Thakur. However, he pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

In his shocking admission to the Magistrates Court in Adelaide magistrate court via a video link from custody, Thakur followed his lawyer’s advice to state, “I plead for manslaughter, but not guilty for murder.”

Vikrant was facing the court on January 14, for the second time, after being charged with the murder of Supriya in December last year.

On December 21, 2025, police responded to a domestic assault call at the couple’s Northfield home and found the 36-year-old Supriya unconscious, reported ABC. Supriya was pronounced dead after efforts to revive her through CPR failed.

Vikrant was immediately arrested, but no bail application was moved at his initial hearing held on December 22.

With the court approving the prosecutors’ request for a 16-week adjournment to compile evidence, including post-mortem, toxicology, DNA analysis, and phone records, hearing in the case will resume in April.

Supriya, a registered nurse, was the mother to a teenaged son.

Friends and community members, who have started a fundraiser to support her son, described Supriya as “a devoted mother who worked tirelessly, often long hours, to build a secure future for her only son… she was known for her caring nature and dedication to helping others. Her tragic passing has left her son without his mother and has turned his life upside down overnight.”
