New Delhi: In a major crisis, the likes of which has not been experienced in India, domestic air travellers have been hit hard by a meltdown in services of IndiGo airline.

As hundreds of flights continue to be cancelled and several others delayed every day, the Central government has taken note of the crisis.

In a statement issued on Friday, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said a high-level inquiry has been ordered and accountability will be fixed.

He also said flight schedules are expected to stabilise by Saturday and a return to normalcy is likely to be achieved within three days, that is, Monday.

Justifying the suspension of certain provisions of the recently implemented Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), aimed at ensuring pilots and crew get adequate rest, the minister said this was done in the interest of passengers and safety will not be compromised.

“In addition to this, several operational measures have been directed to ensure that normal airline services are restored at the earliest and that the inconvenience caused to travellers is significantly reduced. Based on the immediate implementation of these directives, we expect that flight schedules will begin to stabilise and return to normal by tomorrow. We anticipate that complete restoration of services will be achieved within the next three days,” Naidu said.

IndiGo has apologised to passengers, and announced full refund for the period of December 5 to 15.
